Tribune leaves bankruptcy after 4 years

CHICAGO (AP) ? Tribune Co. emerged from a Chapter 11 restructuring Monday, more than four years after the media company sought bankruptcy protection.

The reorganized company is starting with a new board of directors and new ownership that includes senior creditors Oaktree Capital Management, Angelo, Gordon and Co., and JPMorgan Chase and Co.

Tribune closed on a new, $1.1 billion senior secured term loan and a $300 million revolving credit line. The loan will fund payments required under the reorganization plan, and the credit line will fund ongoing operations.

The company also will issue about 100 million shares of class A and class B stock to former creditors, along with warrants to buy the shares. Class B shareholders will have limited voting rights and will not be able to vote for directors.

The new board of directors includes Bruce Karsh, Ken Liang, Peter Murphy, Ross Levinsohn, Craig A. Jacobson, Peter Liguori, and Eddy Hartenstein.

"Tribune emerges from the bankruptcy process as a multimedia company with a great mix of profitable assets, strong brands in major markets and a much-improved capital structure," said Hartenstein, Tribune's chief executive officer.

The Chicago Tribune reported late Sunday that Liguori, a former TV executive at Discovery and Fox, is expected to be named chief executive of the reorganized Tribune Co.

Tribune, which was founded in 1847, publishes some of the best-known newspapers in the United States, including the Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun and the Chicago Tribune. It also owns WGN in Chicago and 22 other television stations, as well as the WGN radio station.

The company sought bankruptcy protection in 2008, less than a year after billionaire developer Sam Zell led an $8 billion leveraged buyout that left the company with $13 billion in debt.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A woman sought in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a subway train was picked up by police on Saturday after a passer-by noticed her on the street and called authorities.

The woman, whose name was not released, was being questioned and had not been formally charged, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said. Investigators were arranging for witnesses to identify the 31-year-old woman in custody as the person who pushed Sunano Sen to his death on Thursday night.

The 46-year-old Sen, who was from India, ran a printing shop and was living in Queens. He died after a woman muttering to herself suddenly lunged forward and pushed him off an elevated platform and onto the tracks of the No. 7 train, which connects Manhattan and Queens.

It was unclear whether the woman had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they waited for the train.

The woman fled after the attack. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station. Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify her.

On Saturday, a passer-by noticed a woman who resembled the woman in the video and called 911l. Police responded and confirmed her identity and took her to a police station, where she made statements implicating herself in the crime, Browne said.

The attack was the second time this month that a man was pushed to his death in a city subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He claimed he acted in self-defense and is awaiting trial.

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) ? The final pass of Tyler Tettleton's dizzying early-game onslaught was beautiful ? a 68-yard touchdown heave to Chase Cochran over two defenders.

Ohio coach Frank Solich couldn't have designed a better beginning to a football game. And the end result ? a dominant 45-14 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in the Independence Bowl on Friday ? wasn't too bad either.

"It was probably as complete of ballgame as we've played in some time," Solich said. "I think our guys played with great intensity and a great deal of heart. We showed we can play a great game against a really good team like Louisiana-Monroe."

Tettleton's early heroics staked the Bobcats (9-4) to an early 14-0 lead and Louisiana-Monroe was never really able to gain its footing. During the two early touchdown drives, Tettleton completed all five of his passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

He finished 14 of 22 passing for 331 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

"We knew we were going up against a great front seven, so our game plan was to take some shots down field and let our playmakers make plays," Tettleton said.

They certainly did. Cochran caught three passes for 162 yards while Tyler Futrell had five receptions for 133 yards. With Tettleton softening the Louisiana-Monroe defense early, running back Beau Blankenship provided the power offense to seal the game, rushing for 104 yards and an Independence Bowl record four touchdowns.

Tettleton was especially sharp in the first half, completing 9 of 14 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns as Ohio built a 24-7 lead.

Louisiana-Monroe (8-5) struggled in its first bowl game after 19 seasons in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Kolton Browning completed 21 of 39 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three first-half interceptions.

Ohio broke several Independence Bowl records, including the 31-point margin of victory and 556 total yards.

Ohio lost four of five games to end the regular season ? including the last three ? but looked crisp in a complete performance against the Warhawks.

Tettleton's 2012 season had been a slight disappointment considering the huge numbers he put up the year before as a sophomore, but his performance against Louisiana-Monroe was a reminder of how good he can be. He averaged more than 23 yards per completion.

Blankenship finished with a school record 1,604 yards rushing yards this season and topped the 100-yard mark for the 10th time. All four of his touchdown runs came from 2 yards out or less.

Louisiana-Monroe came into Friday's game with the better storyline and basically a home-field advantage. The Warhawks were playing in their first bowl game after joining college football's highest level in 1994 and secured a bid in Shreveport, which is only about 100 miles from their campus.

But that emotional lift didn't help ULM's defense, which was torched by Tettleton's deep ball accuracy early and Blankenship's hard running late.

Tettleton needed just three passes to lead Ohio to its first touchdown. He hit Futrell on a 26-yard gain and Cochran on a 51-yard strike before finding Donte Foster for the 3-yard score.

A few minutes later, Tettleton hit Cochran perfectly in stride for the 68-yarder that gave the Bobcats a 14-0 lead.

Louisiana-Monroe briefly showed some life early in the second quarter when Browning's 14-yard touchdown pass to Tavarese Maye cut the margin to 14-7.

But Ohio came right back, using Matt Weller's 38-yard field goal and Blankenship's 2-yard touchdown run to push ahead 24-7 with 4:50 left in the second quarter. Blankenship's touchdown run was set up by Browning's third interception of the first half.

Louisiana-Monroe had a chance to cut into the deficit just before halftime, but coach Todd Berry's gamble to go for a touchdown instead of a short field goal backfired when Browning's final pass of the half sailed harmlessly out the back of the end zone.

Berry's gamble wasn't a surprise ? the Warhawks had gained a reputation for unorthodox play-calling during their record-setting season. But nothing seemed to work against the Bobcats, and the large ULM fan contingent had mostly disappeared from the stands by the end of the third quarter.

It was a disappointing ending for the Warhawks, who started the season with a stunning overtime victory over Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., and still finished with the best season in school history since moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

"This will get us back to work," Berry said. "I would have liked it to have been a little cleaner. But I also recognize the opportunities for this football team next year. This will add fuel to the fire. We will have a great offseason because of what happened today and that's what we're going to use. This group will rally."

Former President George H.W. Bush in intensive care

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush has been admitted to the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital "following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever," but he is alert and talking to medical staff, his spokesman said Wednesday.

Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston, said in a brief email that Bush was admitted to the ICU at Methodist Hospital on Sunday. He said doctors are cautiously optimistic about his treatment and that the former president "remains in guarded condition."

No other details were released about his medical condition, but McGrath said Bush is surrounded by family.

The 88-year-old has been hospitalized since Nov. 23, when he was admitted for a lingering cough related to bronchitis after having been in and out of the hospital for complications related to the illness.

Earlier Wednesday, McGrath said a fever that kept Bush in the hospital over Christmas had gotten worse and that doctors had put him on a liquids-only diet.

"It's an elevated fever, so it's actually gone up in the last day or two," McGrath told The Associated Press. "It's a stubborn fever that won't go away."

But he said the cough that initially brought Bush to the hospital has improved.

Bush was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, and Neil's wife, Maria, and a grandson, McGrath said. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, was expected to arrive Wednesday in Houston from Bethesda, Md. The 41st president has also been visited twice by his sons, George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.

Bush and his wife live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

From its November 2008 market lows, the?SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEARCA:GLD)?- the No. 1 proxy for the ?yellow metal? ? rose as much as 158%, reaching its peak in September 2011. But it?s down about 13% since that time (though it?s up 5% year to date), and a lot of folks are wondering what gold is worth, and how they should play it.

Wall Street?has grown more tepid on gold, with many of the investment banks ratcheting back just a bit on their target prices. But most also see prices heading up to and beyond the $2,000 level in 2013, meaning they see a potential gain of 22% or better.

Peter?s target price is a bit more aggressive: He sees gold trading as high as $2,200 an ounce ? 34% above current prices in the $1,640 range.

I?ve worked with Peter for several years now, and admire the way he works.

He based himself in resource-rich Canada in order to be closer to the many companies that he covers. And he?s made a number of truly superb market calls: In September 2010, for instance, when silver was trading at $19 an ounce, Peter told investors the metal was a??Buy??- and we then watched it soar to a high of $48 (a 153% windfall).

So when I decided to bring you the latest insights on gold ? and some recommendations, as well ? I went to Peter.

Insights on Investing in Gold

His answer: Physical bullion remains a top play; the physical metal is a vehicle for profit,?and?will serve as an excellent hedge against inflation and the many problems that remain in both the global and domestic U.S. economies.

But gold miners (NYSEARCA:GDXJ) are so cheap that they, too, deserve a look.

Well, at least?some?of them do.

?Bill, you?ll see statements from some of Wall Street?s big guns that gold miners are cheap right now,? Peter told me during a telephone chat last week. ?And that?s true. They are cheap on a numerical [fundamental] basis, especially compared with historical valuations. But gold miners are cheap in another way, too ? a way that Wall Street?s either not telling us about, or just doesn?t understand.?

Needless to say, that last statement grabbed my attention. And I told him so.

Peter laughed, and then went on with his commentary.

?Over the last decade or so, the best of these companies have aggressively expanded their reserves. They?ve done so organically ? that is, developed properties themselves. And they?ve done so by purchasing small development-stage, or production-stage players,? Peter said. ?Investors don?t realize just how much it costs to add reserves ? especially if a company is doing so by itself. That?s particularly true today, with all the regulations and public protests boosting environmental and compliance costs.?

Statistics Peter provided bear this out. In 1991, there were 11 gold discoveries. Twenty years later ? in 2011 ? there were three. And companies spent?$8 billion?looking for new strikes that same year.

?So you see, Bill, that the miners that already added reserves had tremendous foresight,? Peter said. ?Having spent a number of years just growing their reserves, all it will take to reap the payoff will be some event that kicks off a mania in?gold prices. And we?re not talking about longshot odds for that to happen. All you need is the ?right? set of events, either domestically or globally, to cause gold prices to rise. When that happens, gold-mining stocks will be off to the races.?

Gold prices?have suffered of late because of a strong?U.S. dollar. That surprising strength (in the face of the whole ?fiscal-cliff? mess) stems from the fact that worries about Europe have transformed the dollar into a ?safe-haven? investment.

Gold and the dollar are negatively correlated because gold is priced in dollars, but most of the buyers aren?t in dollar-based economies. (Because these buyers are?Swiss,?Indian?or?Chinese, just to name a few, they look at the price of gold in?Swiss francs,?Indian rupees?or?Chinese renminbi. And if the U.S. dollar is strong, the?price of gold?in dollars is weak ? even if the native currency price remains the same.)

So the rise we?ve seen in the dollar has been accompanied by a sell-off in gold.

Investing in Gold Stocks

Naturally, that sell-off in gold has affected gold stocks.

Over the past three months?Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM)?is down about 21% and?Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:ABX)?is down about 20%, but the SPDR Gold Shares ETF is down only about 5%.

Looking ahead, the?U.S.?Federal Reserve?s?plan to continue printing money (and that of the?European Central Bank (ECB), or the new stimulus plan we?re likely to get from the?Bank of Japan (BOJ)?should be very good for gold.

And a jump in gold prices will be even better for gold miners.
The reason for that is called??leverage.?

When gold prices jump, a gold-producer sees its earnings accelerate at a faster pace than the price of the actual metal.

I saw a hypothetical in a recent edition of?USA Today?that explains this perfectly.

For example, if you own a mine that can produce gold for $1,100 an ounce, but gold is trading at $1,200, you?re making a profit of $100 an ounce.

But what if gold jumps from that $1,200 price level to, say, $1,500? That?s a price increase of $300, or 25%. For the gold miner, however, profits have jumped from $100 to $300 ? a 200% gain.

Two miners to consider are?Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM)?and?Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:ABX).

?One of the ones that I like is Newmont,? Peter told me. ?It has a very good dividend yield of nearly 3.2%. It?s well-diversified geographically. The stock has gone sideways for a very long time and now the company is making a very concerted effort to keep its costs down.?

Then there?s the?Toronto-based Barrick, the world?s biggest gold producer.

?Barrick, like other miners, has seen that investors are not exactly thrilled with the performance of their shares,? Peter said. ?The reason for that is that the company spent a number of years just growing its reserves. But it did so by using its own stock as currency to buy the smaller companies that we talked about earlier. That was very dilutive.?

But Barrick has suddenly gotten religion ? of the shareholder variety. In June, it fired?CEO Aaron Regent?after less than four years on the job: Board members were apparently peeved that the company?s share price didn?t move during that period, despite the huge run-up in gold prices.

?Going forward, just from the signs or evidence that I?ve seen, the company has adopted a much more investor-attentive attitude ? and the ouster of the CEO is just one bit of that evidence,? Peter said. ?The company is trying to focus on keeping its costs in line. And it?s trying to produce the hell out of what it already has in the ground. The odds are high that we?ll have a pretty good six to 12 months to come.?

Barrick?s 2.4% dividend isn?t bad either ? especially because of the current??zero-interest-rate-policy? (ZIRP) environment.

US cancer screening rates decline over the last 10 years, finds new study

Dec. 27, 2012 ? The rate of people who seek preventive cancer screenings has fallen over the last ten years in the United States with wide variations between white-collar and blue-collar workers, according to a University of Miami Miller School of Medicine study published on December 27 in the open-access journal Frontiers in Cancer Epidemiology.

While earlier diagnoses and improved treatments have increased the number of survivors, cancer remains one of the most prominent chronic diseases and, last year alone, claimed the lives of more than 570,000 people in the U.S.

"There is a great need for increased cancer prevention efforts in the U.S., especially for screening as it is considered one of the most important preventive behaviors and helps decrease the burden of this disease on society in terms of quality of life, the number of lives lost and insurance costs," said lead author Tainya Clarke, M.P.H., research associate in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health.

"But despite this," Clarke continued, "our research has shown that adherence rates for cancer screenings have generally declined with severe implications for the health outlook of our society."

For their NIH-funded study, Clarke and her team evaluated the cancer screening behaviors of the general public and cancer survivors to see if government-recommended screenings goals were achieved.

The study looked at cancer screening adherence rates for colorectal, breast, cervical and prostate cancers and compared the screening rates among the general public to all cancer survivors and to the subpopulation of employed survivors.

Results showed that the general public did not meet government recommendations for cancer screenings for any cancer types except colorectal cancer. About 54 percent of the general public underwent colorectal screenings, exceeding the 50 percent goal of the government's "Healthy People 2010" national health promotion and disease prevention initiative.

By contrast, cancer survivors, who are at an increased risk of developing the disease, had higher screening rates and underwent the recommended cancer screenings for all types except cervical cancer, which decreased to 78 percent over the last decade. The study also showed a decline among cancers survivors who sought cancer screenings over the last three years.

The researchers used the recommended cancer screening rates set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and looked at data from the National Health Interview Survey between 1997 and 2010. In total, 174,393 people were included in the study analysis, with 7,528 employed cancer survivors and 119,374 people representing the general population.

In addition, the study showed that among survivors, white collar workers had higher screening rates than blue collar workers -- a crucial discovery that Clarke hopes will help change current job-related policies and overcome disparities within different professions of working cancer survivors.

The researchers speculated that ongoing disagreements among the United States Preventive Services Task Force, American Cancer Society and others over screening guidelines, as well as the decrease in worker insurance rates over the decade may have influenced the decline in screening rates.

Clarke hopes that more comprehensive research will assess the combined factors affecting screening rates and lead to more effective workplace interventions and increase screening within each occupational sector.

Man pushed to death in front of NYC subway

Detectives in New York are searching for a female suspect who fled a subway station after a man was fatally pushed in front of a train on an elevated platform in Queens, N.Y.

At 8:04 p.m. on Thursday an unnamed male passenger was standing on the northbound platform of the 40th Street and Queens Blvd. in Queens, waiting for the 7 train. Witnesses told police that a woman was walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before she took a seat on a wooden bench on the platform.

As the 7 train approached the station, witnesses said the woman rose from the bench and pushed the man, who was standing with his back to her.

"They said that [she] pushed somebody to the tracks," Jiovanni Briones, who owns restaurant across the street from the station, told WABC. "Who knows, maybe it was a fight?"

Witnesses told police that the victim did not notice the woman behind him. He was struck by the first of the 11-car train, with his body pinned under the front of the second car as the train came to a stop, according to a statement from Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown.

After pushing the man onto the platform the woman then fled down two separate stair cases to Queens Blvd. She was described as wearing a blue, white and grey ski jacket, and grey and red Nike sneakers.

It is unclear if the two knew each other, or whether anyone on the platform attempted to help the man off the platform before he was struck by the train.

Police said that there was no video of the incident or suspect from the station itself, but detectives are now canvassing locations along Queens Blvd for witnesses and surveillance video.

Thursday's death marks the second incident this month of a man being killed after being pushed onto subway tracks and killed by an oncoming train.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was tossed onto the subway track at 49th Street and Seventh Avenue around 12:30 p.m. after an altercation with a man who was later identified as 30-year-old Naeem Davis. Davis has been charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail.

Blog outs staff of newspaper that published gun-owner addresses

Yesterday we told you about the interactive map of local gun owners published by the?Journal-News,?a newspaper serving the Westchester and Rockland counties of New York, and the outcry it immediately drew. Turns out the stunt was so unpopular ? with gun owners and privacy advocates alike ? that a blogger named Christopher Fountain took it upon himself to dig up and organize the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the?Journal-News staff, starting with editor Cyndee Royle. The post is called "Keep up the heat" and encourages readers to pester the paper and prevent them from continuing to report gun-owner addresses.

As long as they were keeping it to letters to the editor(s), the staff list was, at first, small potatoes as far as payback goes: the allure of the paper's original map of gun owners was the ability to see who, and how many people, owned a gun near a specific address ? the paper's stunt was a map, not just a (sparsely populated) list of names. But overnight a different retaliatory blogger decided to map the newspaper staff addresses culled thus far (from Google and elsewhere). Here's what Robert Cox, of?Talk of the Sound, came up with:

It's a disparate (and perhaps desperate) effort ? there are only eleven addresses, one of which is located in Manhattan ? and lacks the visual impact of the original map, which indicated just how many gun owners (and guns) there are in just two counties in blue-state New York. So it's not particularly interesting, but it may be dangerous, and it's certainly depressing ? as its author notes: "Be advised that the Journal News has been in downsizing mode for the past several years. I have to wonder if all these names are current employees but we will treat them as such until we learn otherwise."

It's an open question whether the retribution is misplaced. In a morning interview with CNN, Fountain said he was angered by calls from victims of domestic abuse with gun permits who were worried their whereabouts had been inadvertently revealed. And, more philosophically: "In the aftermath of Newtown, it was obviously one tragedy, but somehow they were conflating legal gun owners with some crazed tormented devil up in Newtown and putting the two together."

Eyes may provide a look into multiple sclerosis progression

Dec. 24, 2012 ? New research suggests that thinning of a layer of the retina in the eyes may show how fast multiple sclerosis (MS) is progressing in people with the disease. The study is published in the Jan. 1, 2013, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"This study suggests that retinal thinning, measured by in-office eye scans, called OCT, may occur at higher rates in people with earlier and more active MS," said Robert Bermel, MD, with the Cleveland Clinic Mellen Center for MS and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, who wrote an accompanying editorial.

For the study, 164 people with MS from the Johns Hopkins MS Center, including 59 who had no disease activity, underwent eye scans that measured thinning of a portion of their retinas every six months for an average of 21 months. Participants were also given MRI brain scans at the start of the study and yearly.

The study found that people with MS relapses had 42 percent faster thinning than people with MS who had no relapses. People with MS who had inflammatory lesions called gadolinium-enhancing lesions experienced 54 percent faster thinning and those with new T2 lesions had 36 percent faster thinning than MS patients without these features of MRI activity.

People whose level of disability worsened during the study experienced 37 percent more thinning than those who had no changes in their level of disability, and those who had the disease less than five years showed 43 percent faster thinning than those who had the disease more than five years.

"As more therapies are developed to slow the progression of MS, testing retinal thinning in the eyes may be helpful in evaluating how effective those therapies are," said study author Peter Calabresi, MD, with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study was supported by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the National Eye Institute and Braxton Debbie Angela Dillon and Skip Donor Advisor Fund.

Mastering a Travel Language: Speaking in IATA

I have written in the recent past that I consider myself to be a traveler now; I travel relatively often, I understand the jargon, and I only want to travel more. But lately, I?ve realized that my language is evolving into something more. No, I don?t mean that because I travel I?m learning new vocabulary in foreign languages (though that happens too), but rather the way I talk is starting to change.

Specifically, I have become so used to booking tickets and writing about different destinations that I have begun referencing airlines, airports, and even cities with their IATA code designation.

The IATA, or the?International Air Transport Association?is the major industry trade association of the air travel industry.?IATA currently represents over 240 airlines in more than 120 countries. With about 84% of the world?s air traffic as members of the trade group, IATA designations have become the standard protocol used throughout the world at airports and on airlines. Since they represent almost the entire air travel industry, they have set their own standard of designations and rules so that there is less confusion among the members and customers alike. The IATA helps to set prices, established delay codes, but what I really speak of them for is their assignation of the?3-letter?IATA airport codes?and 2-letter?IATA airline?designation.

Almost every commercial airport has received its IATA code, and likewise, almost every commercial airline has its IATA code. For airports, these are codes such as ?JFK? for New York City?s John F. Kennedy International Airport and ?LHR? for London?s Heathrow Airport. About two years ago, I started labeling airports with these 3-letter IATA designations, rather than calling them ?Kennedy? or ?Heathrow? like I used to. That was the first indication of my budding proficiency in this ?traveler?s language.?

About 6 months ago, when referring to airlines, I began writing and speaking about them (at times) with their 2-digit IATA designation. Previously, I might have called American Airlines as ?AA,? though I never initially meant to refer to it by its IATA code; it was just easier and it made sense, like ?JFK.? However, I quickly continued, calling KLM as ?KL,? then Singapore Airlines as ?SQ.? Now, I recently found myself calling jetBlue as ?B6,? which seems to have nothing to do with its full name.

Though I am quickly becoming proficient in this language of IATA, I still have much more to learn before I?m an expert; frankly, the stuff I?m not familiar with is downright strange, especially if I know it and use it. It seems that they have gone so far as to make 4-letter code designations for the different meal offerings during a flight:
