For more than two decades, October has been recognized as National Arts and Humanities Month to recognize contributions made by the non-profit arts industries nationwide. Thousands of arts and cultural organizations, communities and states across the country, joined the White House and Congress in the proclamation that honors the more than $135 billion in total economic activity generated annually by the industry that employs more than 4 million Americans.
Locally, Gov. Brian Sandoval?s National Arts and Humanities Month proclamation encourages Nevadans of all ages to celebrate the arts and humanities by engaging in the many cultural activities in Nevada cities and towns, large and small, urban and rural, throughout the year.
?The arts and humanities embody much of the accumulated wisdom, intellect, and imagination of humankind and they enhance and enrich the lives of everyone,? said Nevada Arts Council Executive Director Susan Boskoff. ?They also provide a critical boost to our state?s economy.?
Hundreds of arts and humanities organizations across the Silver State provide citizens and tourists an abundance of programs that enliven and strengthen Nevada communities of all sizes, Boskoff said. ? We celebrate the arts every day ? but in October, we do it as a nation.?
National Arts and Humanities Month is a coast-to-coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. It is designed to encourage all Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of active participation in these activities. Among the suggested opportunities to become involved are
- Hosting a special NAHM event.
- Promoting NAHM at a planned event or publication.
- Giving a ?behind-the-scenes? tour of your facility or event for families and students.
- Creating a community photo album to post on the Internet, inviting local residents to donate old photographs and take new ones throughout the month.
- Asking local artists of all ages to create a community video to post on the Internet.
- Inviting local government officials to any events that you plan.
- Buying a ticket to an event you normally don?t attend.
- Reading a book by a Nevada author.
- Nominating an arts/cultural organization in your community to be featured on the National Endowment for the Arts Facebook page before Oct. 31
- Starting to plan for 2013 NAHM today
The Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, was founded in 1967 as the state agency charged with ensuring that state and national funds support cultural activity and encourage participation in the arts throughout Nevada. The agency?s programs and services are designed to support creative expression, animate communities, diversify local economies and provide lifelong learning in the arts for all Nevadans. The Nevada Arts Council is funded by the Nevada State Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts and other public and private sources.
